You pick out one goal (which, as the commentator said was his first international goal in a major tournament, aged 25) and that proves me wrong does it? You clearly don't understand what I mean if you think a lobbed volley from 40yds means striking a ball well. And he carried us the year we got relegated. Good job other "brilliant" "unbelievable" players haven't carried us like that. Why can people never understand that when someone says they think a player is overrated is doesn't mean they think the player was useless, it's not binary.

Like that mishit, poorly struck goal for England v Sweden in the World Cup?

Joe Cole was a brilliant footballer. Playing centre mid in the unfortunate relegation season was one of the best season performances I’ve seen. Absolutely carried us.

The celebration for Chelsea left a bit of bad taste, but it is what it is. If Mourinho didn’t take the maverick out of him, he’d have been unbelievable.

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
Lovely fella who had too much expectation from a young age (due to Redknapp wanting the best price for him no doubt) and overrated in my opinion, could never strike a ball very well and didn't look up enough. You could put together a fairly substantial montage of mishit deflected goals he scored.

He says that he wants to be a manager.

Christ, he's as thick as shit. Nowhere near bright enough to manage professional footballers.

Chelsea cunt.

A hugely overhyped footballer that didn't amount to much.

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
But Joe had no football brain and could not read the game. Skill but no brain so he was always a disappointment in the end. Many other midfielders of the time had both, Frank Lampard, Gerrard and Carrick to name a few had both skill and a football brain.

The way are some are going on you would think he was Ravel Morrison
He played over 700 games , won 3 Premier league titles plus other trophies and was the best player in the mid 2000’s England team.
Obviously the frustration is that he played for Chelsea under the dead hand of Mourinho.
Which made him just another cunt in a parade of cunts managed by the Special Cunt.

Joe Cole was a footballer and one we should be proud of having play for us.

He was talked up too much as a kid so people now feel he underachieved but when you see his haul of medals and caps and then see him rock up in his 30s in the states to play alongside Freddy Adu you can see a direct comparison and realise what he achieved.

I had a look back at the FA Cup youth final and realised that the Coventry player giving away the penalty at UP was Callum Davenport. Shit trivia for you

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
I don't think that even Joe Cole's tiny little brain knew what team that he actually supported.

Anyway, as soon as he fucked-off to the historyless classless cunt plastic Chelsea wankers; I stopped giving two shits about the div.

It disgusted me.

Another day... happy to be corrected seems like he was a CFC fan.... never realsed when he was at Lille on loan for that season that he was in midfield with hazard and Payet... been worth watching that season...

I believe he is a Chelsea fan and has said as such.

Agree with your comments ref the celebrations..I mean if you were to beat your mother in a game of scrabble would you not celebrate just because she's your mother?

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
I don't give a monkey's what players do and don't do at other clubs... for me it's a bit cringe when they don't celebrate a goal against a former club... but that's just me... he never supported us (his family are all Goons).. he wasn't a fan... but when he played for us he busted a gut... he's a good lad... good luck in the retirement... and I wish we had a few underachievers who achieved as much as he did in the game...

Re: Joe Cole retires from football

had already refused to sign a new contract prior to relegation - he would have left anyway so dont give me this rubbish about how much he loves the club.
then scores against us for chelsea and goes mental.

would you or I do that? of course not because we actually love the club.

You’re right, he didn’t do a Defoe (who played in Division One.

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
Always loved the bloke and never had anything against him. He moved to Chelsea, but it wasn't like he did a Defoe. Cole was still with us in preseason after going down.

And all that shit about not doing a goal celebration, just because its your old team... I would not be impressed with Arnie when he doesn't celebrate his brace against Inter in our upcoming Champions league final. Or whenever he scores against Stoke.

Cole was a great player and he played with love for the game, which made him a joy to watch, but he should have played in a more central role, which is also where he was best for us. Playing centrally together with Carrick, before it all went bad as per usual.
I seem to remember Cole asked to play on the left side in order to enhance his England career.

Massively underachieved with the talent he had.

I put it down to a mixture of lack of effort and intelligence

Good luck to him hope he enjoys the rest of his life with his family in happiness and good health.

Football wise for us I would say good to average always got tagged as the brilliant youngster never for me was all that brilliant, though he had some day,s when he was fantastic and clever, but far too few.
